coLABoratory: Playing It UNsafe (Workshop III) | American Composers Orchestra

This season, coLABoratory will include a unique incubation process of workshops, public readings, collaborative feedback, and laboratory performances of music, open to the public, taking place from November 2012 through April 2013. Each composer’s work is developed with the orchestra over the course of the season.

On Friday January 25th, Iktus will be premiering seven new pieces written for the group for the Music at First Concert Series at the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn. The concert was originally supposed to take place on Nov. 9th, but because of hurricane Sandy, they had to postpone it until January.

Alvin Curran

The Alvin Curran Fake Book is a solo performance – a culminating project of sounds from everywhere spontaneously played with musical sketches, modules and compostions from 1965-to the present. Realized with 1000′s of digital samples played from a keyboard, a piano, voice, shofar, harmonica, and found objects.

String Theories | Uri Caine and Sirius Quartet

The program includes the Boston premiere of Caine’s String Theories piano quintet, written for the Sirius Quartet. The composition had its world premiere in April 2012 at the Theaterhaus Jazz Festival in Stuttgart and the US premiere at the Tribeca New Music Fest in New York City. Both concerts will also feature original music by members of Sirius Quartet including works by Fung Chern Hwei, Gregor Huebner, and Jeremy Harman, as well as some free improvisations by the 5 musicians.

Mozart’s Birthday Celebration

Ecstatic Music Festival | Carla Kihlstedt, ICE, Causing a Tiger, & Face the Music

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer Carla Kihlstedt joins the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) to premiere Kihlstedt’s new ICElab commission, At Night We Walk in Circles and Are Consumed by Fire. Written for nine members of ICE plus Kihlstedt, the song cycle is based on images, impressions and textures taken from dreams from various sources, including the players themselves. Also on the bill are Kihlstedt’s band, Causing a Tiger, and teen alt-classical sensations Face the Music, who will join ICE in performing George Lewis’s Artificial Life 2007.
