Johannes Brahms: Before, During & After
The opening program of the 2014 – 2015 Reflections Series International season features Johannes Brahms’ Piano Trio in B Major, written in 1854 but completely revised in 1891. This program will bring to life the musical references of preceding composers (Schubert, Beethoven, Bach and Schumann) that lie at the heart of this great work. Rounding out the program will be his ever-popular Violin Sonata in D minor, and Brett Dean’s Hommage à Brahms (2014).

Composer Portraits: Chou Wen-chung
Chou Wen-chung has played a vital role in the confluence of Eastern and Western musical traditions. Born in Yantai, Chou moved to New York to study at Columbia, where he later joined the faculty himself, mentoring important next-generation Chinese composers such as Tan Dun, Bright Sheng, and Zhou Long. He was a lifelong protégé of Edgard Varèse. This Portrait spans from Echoes from the Gorge to a string quartet commissioned in response to Bach’s Art of Fugue.
