Face the Music: TAKE OFF!

Face the Music will feature two of its enembles: Face the Music Symphony will perform Symphonic Greek Dances by Paris Lavidis and Ravi Shankar’s rarely performed collaboration, Passages. Sound Bite Orchestra, which specializes in forms of creative improvisation, will perform an original work inspired by Walter Thompson’s Sound Painting.

New and Old Music for Baroque Violas

Violists Kristina Giles and Jessica Meyer team up for an evening of duos and solos on gut-stringed violas. Baroque and classical works by LeClair and Campagnoli will be performed alongside the premiere of a duo by Jessica Meyer and a collection of duets by Luciano Berio. Meyer will also perform her solo loop of Dido from her new album, Sounds of Being.

Paula Kimper

Femme Lunatique Productions (UK), Companion Star (USA), and Once in a Blue Moon Music (USA) present an exclusive first reading of One Art, the inaugural commission for a song set based on the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop. Composer Paula Kimper and soprano Laure Meloy will give a work-in-progress performance, read selections of Bishop’s poetry, and discuss plans to complete, premiere, and record this new work.

The Voice of the Violin

The Voice of the Violin continues Gil Morgenstern’s showcasing of the singularly expressive range of the violin and the diverse manner in which composers have exploited it. This program will take us around the globe, from east to west and from the Baroque to contemporary styles. Highlights include an elegant Sonata by Jean-Marie Leclaire, Beethoven’s grand Violin Sonata in G Major, The Stream Flows by the Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng, and the angular modernity of Elliott Carter’s Riconoscenza per Goffredo Petrassi.
