Divine Mysteries | MATA Festival

The 20th MATA Festival kicks off with MATA Divine Mysteries, the premiere event in a new initiative devoted to sacred music. The intimate interior of Yorkville’s evocative Church of the Epiphany will host a sunset ritual performed without pause. The centerpiece of the evening will be David M. Gordon’s song-cycle Mysteria Incarnationis, a forty-minute meditation on Christ’s taking on of human form, setting text of Ephrem the Syrian, sung in the original Syriac. Additional works by Shawn Jaeger and Lydia Winsor Brindamour together with a world premiere miniature from Nico Muhly will round out a night of contemporary sacred music.

CONTACT!

Musicians from the New York Philharmonic return for the final performance of CONTACT!, its new-music series. Hosted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, the evening will showcase emerging Russian composers Nikolay Popov, Denis Khorov, Marina Khorkova, Dmitri Kourliandski, and Alexander Khubeev.

Patty Waters | Blank Forms

Sounds of Akari

The program features the world premieres of Ethan Iverson’s first orchestral work, Concerto to Scale, with the composer as the piano soloist, and Steve Lehman’s Ten Threshold Studies, both commissioned by ACO; and the New York premieres of Clarice Assad’s Dreamscapes featuring violinist Elena Urioste, TJ Anderson’s Bahia Bahia, and Hitomi Oba’s September Coming, which was first read at the Buffalo Philharmonic EarShot Readings led by ACO after Oba’s participation in ACO’s 2015 Jazz Composers Orchestra Initiative.

Music of Joel Feigin and Camden Boyle

The concert will include Joel Feigin’s Tapestry for horn, violin, and piano, two songs from Twelfth Night for baritone and piano, and the world premiere of two piano-vocal excerpts from Feigin’s latest opera, Oedipus at Colonus: Antigone’s Plea for Refuge for soprano and Oedipus’s Prayer to the Furies for bass. Camden Boyle will present his String Quartet, Mid-Month, and Three Piano Preludes.

Cellist Clarice Jensen releases her debut solo album, For this from that will be filled, worldwide on Miasmah Recordings on April 6, 2018. She celebrates the release with this concert featuring music from the album. The Ambient Church concert also celebrates the release of electronic artist Christina Vantzou’s new album, No. 4, and includes the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), Steve Hauschildt, Deradoorian, John Also Bennett, and C. Lavender.

Infinite Hope

The concert features the Musica Viva NY Choir in Alice Parker’s A Sermon From the Mountain: Martin Luther King, which pays tribute to Dr. King, and is inspired by the Biblical verses frequently quoted by him and the spirituals which use these texts. The program also features spirituals, and the Aeolus Quartet performs Dvořák’s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, “American.”
