Major Orchestral Works | Morton Feldman

The 100-piece Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava (JPO) (Czech Republic) comes to New York to perform an evening of Morton Feldman’s music – the first all-Feldman orchestra concert in the U.S. Highlights will include the American premieres of the hour-long Violin and Orchestra and Flute and Orchestra (dedicated to Edgar Varèse), 35 years after their creation. The program also includes Structures for Orchestra, the first in a series of orchestra works that Feldman continued to compose throughout the rest of his life, and the lyrical Piano and Orchestra.

Cage, Wolff, and Vítková | Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava

The Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava (JPO) performs three pieces never before heard in New York: Cage’s last orchestra composition 103, a 90-minute piece for 103 musicians, commissioned by WDR (Cologne, Germany) for his 80th birthday; the world premiere of Christian Wolff’s individuals, collective, commissioned by Beyond Cage and composed for the JPO and Kotik; and the U.S. premiere of Czech composer Lucie Vítková’s (b. 1985) Accept, for solo accordion, drum set and symphony orchestra.

New York City Opera VOX Festival | John Zorn, Moto Osada, Christopher Weiss, Evan Meier, James Stepleton, and Osnat Netzer

This year’s VOX Festival selections are a diverse group, ranging from explorations of the psychological states of soldiers in the Red Army (The Last Act of Revolution) and the societal restraints binding three women over three different centuries (In A Mirror, Darkly) to a farcical romp about clinging to the fantasy of an unrequited lover (The Wondrous Woman Within). VOX 2012 will also see the return of celebrated composer John Zorn (La Machine de l’être, read at VOX 2007 and staged at NYC Opera in 2011) with his new work The Holy Visions.

Composed Cocktails | The Nouveau Classical Project

The Nouveau Classical Project ensemble invites guests to enjoy new music in an intimate Lower East Side loft space alongside custom music-inspired cocktails. The thirty minute concert will feature a music by award-winning composers with their cocktail pairings: Sweet Air by David Lang- Champagne and Rose Essence Lost Generation by Trevor Gureckis- Sidecar Things My Father Never Told Me by Jay Wadley- Dark Rum and Pear Cider Following the concert will be a synth dance party with members of My Great Ghost, who are featured on the new Beck and Philip Glass collaboration, Rework: Philip Glass Remixed. With music, libations, and revelry, Composed Cocktails is more than a concert; it’s a complete night out.
