Composer Guy Barash brings his new works to Turtle Bay Music School for a free concert as an Exploring the Metropolis Con Edison Composer-in-Residence. In addition to the world premiere of his first string quartet and a piece for piano and electronics, Barash will present excerpts from his evolving opera Alice Invents a Little Game and Alice Always Wins, based on the play by Nick Flynn.

Three new operas are showcased in excerpts: Generalissimo by Reinaldo Moya, She: An Opera of Adventure by Mark Thome, and The Three Truths by Matthew Welch. Corps Exquis | Daniel Wohl & Transit New Music
Daniel Wohl
Electroacoustic composer Daniel Wohl’s project Corps Exquis incorporates electronics, chamber music performance and video art to create an immersive multimedia experience. Performed by the chamber ensemble TRANSIT with Wohl on electronics, each piece is accompanied by a video created specifically for it by some of New York’s brightest young visual artists: Antoine Catala, Alexis Gambis, Satan’s Pearl Horses, Andrew Steinmetz & Teddy Stern, Brina Thurston, and Yui Kugimiya. Inspired by the “exquisite corpse” parlor game popular in Surrealist circles in 1920s Paris through which a group of artists creates a single piece of art, the visuals blend together disparate aesthetics to create a surprising body of work. Notes on Fiction: Fahrenheit 451
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, The Nouveau Classical Project will be performing a concert featuring both traditional and contemporary music surrounding the references in the book. This concert will feature music by Rzewski, Shostakovich, and an avant-garde work by award-winning composer Lewis Nielson. Excerpts from the book will be read between pieces, followed by a reception.

Sound of Silent Film Festival
Chicago’s Sound of Silent Film Festival will make its New York debut on June 7th and 8th. The festival will screen twelve silent films made mostly in the past few decades, accompanied by scores written expressly for them by noted contemporary composers. The music will be performed live by a small ensemble consisting of Alicia Poot Kelley, flute, Christie Miller, clarinet, Alyson Berger, cello, and Hulya Alpakin and Seth Boustead, pianos. Francesco Milioto conducts.

You’re Causing Quite a Disturbance | Brooklyn Philharmonic
Pairing Badu with Brooklyn composer Ted Hearne, the Brooklyn Philharmonic will perform a program of seamlessly integrated new music featuring collaborative arrangements of songs from Badu’s 2008 album New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War. Hearne and Badu will accentuate and orchestrate New Amerykah’s themes of identity, struggle and hip-hop, through new interludes incorporating the words of Michelle Alexander (author of “The New Jim Crow”) and Badu herself, and through bold hybrids of disparite musical worlds. The two performances at BAM also feature Bed-Stuy native and Brooklyn Philharmonic 2011-2012 Artist-in-Residence Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), performing a reprise of selected works from last year’s acclaimed collaboration with the Brooklyn Phil, with arrangements of Bey’s songs by composer Derek Bermel.

Sirius Quartet
Sirius Quartet will be joined by accordion wizard Peter Stan (Slavic Soul Party, Harold Seletsky, The West End Klezmorim), bassist Ken Filiano (Jason Kao Hwang’s EDGE) and special guest Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin and Wood) in this fiery program. Violinist/composer Gregor Huebner’s “Colors of the East” and “String Quintet No.1″ will be the center pieces of the performance, along with free improvisation pieces with drummer Billy Martin.
