Concerts at One: Twelve in 12

Trinity Wall Street’s longest running series of free concerts kicks off the season with a mini-festival: Twelve in 12, featuring NOVUS NY with conductor Julian Wachner performing 12 different works by the 12 recent Pulitzer Prize winners in Music Composition. Program for September 20: Kevin Puts, Einstein on Mercer Street; Christopher Burchett, baritone.Yehudi Wyner, The Second Madrigal: Voices of Women; Anne Harley, soprano.

FONT Festival at University Settlement | TILT Brass

Dave Douglas’ Festival of New Trumpet (FONT) presents TILT Brass during its 10th anniversary festival. Program includes the world premiere of the next chapter in Nate Wooley’s on-going concept Seven Storey Mountain and the East Coast Premiere of Dutch composer Louis Andriessen’s de Volharding (1972).

Awakenings | Momenta Quartet

Momenta Quartet

Momenta Quartet performs contemporary works by Asian American composers, and a composition by John Cage, for a program inspired by Buddhist art and thought. The performance features Kee Yong Chong‘s Clouds Surging (2011), Ushio Torikai‘s Four Teen (2003), Huang Ruo‘s The Flag Project(2009), and Jason Kao Hwang‘s If We Live in Forgetfulness, We Die in a Dream (2011). In honor of John Cage’s centenary year, Momenta closes the performance with Cage’s Quartet in Four Parts (1951), which draws from Indian philosophy. Featuring the world premiere of Canadian artist John Gurrin’s video art, created for Cage’s composition.

The Piramada Concert | Efterklang and the Wordless Music Orchestra

Danish band Efterklang plays the music from its new album Piramida. For this collaboration with the 16-member Wordless Music Orchestra and guest conductor Matthew Coorey, Efterklang has engaged composers Missy Mazzoli, Karsten Fundal, and Daníel Bjarnason to create arrangements of the music of Piramida for the ensemble with orchestra. For this concert, Efterklang (Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, Rasmus Stolberg) will perform as a six-piece ensemble, augmented by Peter Broderick (piano), Katinka Fogh Vindelev (choir), and special guest Budgie (drums).

New Juilliard Ensemble

The September 22nd program features three U.S. premieres – Chino Toledo’s (Philippines) Mga Sulyap sa Simbahan ng Quiapo Mula sa Kalve Echague (Glimpses of Quiapo Church from Echague Street) (2004); Andrew Ford’s (Australia): The Unquiet Grave (1998) for viola and sinfonietta; and Menachem Zur’s (Israel): Cartoons (2005-8) for voice and chamber orchestra with bass-baritone Davone Tines; the New York premiere of Chinary Ung’s (Cambodia/U.S.) Rain of Tears (2006); and Du Yun’s (China/U.S.) Impeccable Quake (2000).

Music/Words | Corigliano, Eaton and Beethoven

Pianist Inna Faliks and special guests David Adam Moore and Sandra Beasley are featured at the Music/Words 5th Season opening at Le Poisson Rouge. This performance includes the world premiere of the song cycle for baritone and piano by John Eaton, Songs of Nature … and Beyond, with baritone David Adam Moore. Faliks will play Beethoven’s Sonata opus 111 in c minor and also Fantasia on an Ostinato by John Corigliano.
