This week: concerts in New York (January 7 – January 13, 2013)

Unraveling | Corey Dargel, Jacob Cooper

Corey Dargel – Photo by Robert Mciver

Unraveling presents art song cycles by composers Corey Dargel and Jacob Cooper. Backed by a classically trained rock ensemble, Dargel premieres the full version of Hold Yourself Together, his set of songs about composure and technology. In Cooper’s cycle Silver Threads, the soprano Mellissa Hughes sings with microtonal precision over a flickering, quasi-transcendental electronic track, with lighting design by Eric Southern, supertitles/projections by Laura Grey, and poetry by Kristin Kelly, Dora Malech and Zach Savich. The meditative quality of Silver Threads provides the perfect complement to Dargel’s up-tempo trickster-cynicism.

American Idyll | Momenta Quartet

The concert features works that illustrate the creative scope of American new music, all hailing from the latter half of the 20th century from composers active in New York. Momenta’s violinist Adda Kridler and cellist Michael Haas will offer contrasting solo works, each expanding upon a single idea: Christian Wolff’s “Bread and Roses” (1976) for solo violin, based on an early 20th-century millworkers’ protest song, and Elliott Carter’s intricate “Figment No. 1” (1994) for solo cello. Bookending the program are two divergent string quartets written in 1950, beginning with Stefan Wolpe’s aphoristic “Twelve Pieces for String Quartet.” In a final contrast, Momenta will round out the program with John Cage’s seminal and timeless “String Quartet in Four Parts,” inspired by East Indian philosophy and the profound spirit of Zen contemplation. This performance is part of the Stone’s January 2013 series curated by violinist-composer David Fulmer.

DINNER AND PERFORMANCE
For the occasion of Roulette’s first annual benefit, Monk will be performing a sneak preview of her newest evening-length work, On Behalf of Nature. In this work, Monk offers a poetic meditation on the environment. Using her recent composition Realm Variations for vocalists and instrumentalists as a point of departure, she employs contrasts in range from high to low to create an expansive sound world of different musical realms. Within this world, Monk evokes the Buddhist notion of the existence of different realm categories—the idea of joining heaven and earth by way of human beings.
