Steal a Pencil For Me

Based on the book of the same title by Jaap Polak and Ina Soep Polak, Steal A Pencil For Me, a new opera with music by Gerald Cohen and libretto by Deborah Brevoort, will have its premiere as a series of semi-staged concert opera performances in Scarsdale and New York City, NY in late April, 2013. Steal A Pencil For Me is a love story set in two concentration camps during World War II. It is based on the true story of Jaap and Ina Polak, whom the composer has known for the last 25 years, and who just celebrated their 100th and 90th birthdays.

Paul Sacher Tribute Concert | Orchestra for the Next Century

Orchestra for the Next Century pays tribute to the eminent Swiss conductor and musical philanthropist Paul Sacher with performances of two spectacular works he commissioned from Igor Stavinsky and Bohuslav Martinu. ONC pairs these landmark compositions with two recent works by distinguished American composers Margaret Brouwer and Paul Moravec. For the New York premiere of Margaret Brouwer’s Violin Concerto, ONC is joined by acclaimed violinist Michi Wiancko, for whom the concerto was written.

The Brooklyn Philharmonic presents its 2013 OUTSIDE-IN Chamber Concert. The Brooklyn Phil Chamber Players will premiere brand new string quartets from this season’s Outside-In Fellows, all Brooklyn residents: Jesse Krakow, Toshi Reagon and Hadi Eldebek. New York Now! | Gay Words/Gay Music

A two night SongFusion event co-curated by Michael Kelly and Kathleen Tagg; part of New York Now!, an annual SongFusion series created by Kathleen Tagg that celebrates songs written by living composers in New York City. SongFusion celebrates the LGBT community in New York, and the composers who give voice to it. The program of the first concert, on May 3rd includes works by living New York song composers running a wide gamut of styles:David Del Tredici, Ned Rorem, Paula Kimper, David Leisner, Ben Moore, Eve Beglarian, Glen Roven, and David Sisco. The program explores issues of gay life (sex, exploration, love and loss) in a program that is sometimes touching, sometimes scintillating andalways personal, performed by a roster of award-winning artists.

San Francisco’s Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet returns with a focus on new, Kronos-commissioned works: You Know Me From Here (world premiere) by  Missy Mazzoli; Ukrainian innovator Silvestrov’s String Quartet No. 3 (New York premiere); and Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov’s Babylon, Our Own (New York premiere), featuring virtuoso clarinetist David Krakauer. The program also includes a recent Kronos favorite, Jacob Garchik’s arrangement of Laurie Anderson’s concise and delicate Flow.

New York Now! | Ricky Ian Gordon’s Green Sneakers: Benefit Concert for Bailey Holt House

SongFusion presents Voxare String Quartet and baritone Michael Kelly in a special benefit performance of Ricky Ian Gordon’s Green Sneakers, held at New York’s LGBT Community Center with stage direction by Jeanne Slater. Green Sneakers is a heart wrenching account of the loss of Ricky’s partner Jeffrey Grossi to AIDS. Stunningly honest, the songs draw particular attention to the often-unseen struggles of the caretaker of a sick loved-one. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Bailey Holt House, an AIDS facility in Greenwich Village, which suffered damage during Hurricane Sandy.
