Time | Caroline Stinson

Canadian cellist Caroline Stinson presents a compelling program of music for cello with piano and electronics in her Merkin Hall solo recital debut this November. Sponsored by the Consulate General of Finland in New York, the evening explores composers interested in time, how music is conceived within it and how we experience it. Brought about by a series of events going back to 2009, when she attended a seminar with Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen, Time is the context for the works presented, a perspective that is continually changing.

Musical Ecologies | TRAVIS JUST: The Music of Object Collection

Musical Ecologies continues Thursday, November 7 with Brooklyn-based composer Travis Just. Known for his experimental scores for the music and theater performance group Object Collection, Just will discuss the musical side of this innovative collaborative project he co-founded in 2004 with writer-director Kara Feely. Mixing conversation with audio and video examples, the evening will explore a number of recent and past works including the 2013 opera NO HOTEL which premiered in September at Incubator Arts in New York.

Neighborhood Classics presents versatile contemporary music pianist Kathleen Supové in concert. Supové’s diverse program includes Reflets dans l’Eau (from Images Book 1) by Claude Debussy, Cakewalking (Sorry Claude) by Daniel Felsenfeld, Long Distance Call by Randall Woolf, Disney Remixes by Matt Marks, Piano Miniatures by Mohammed Fairouz, and Feux d’Artifice (from Préludes, Book II) by Claude Debussy. The performance will be hosted by James Matheson, composer and Neighborhood Classics Artistic Director at P.S. 142. All ticket sales for this one-hour, family-friendly concert benefit the host school.

The Exploration Project

Scott M. Rifken brings The Exploration Project back to Spectrum. The Exploration Project was founded by Scott Rifkin in the 1990s. Performers who have recorded with the group include Jeff Shurdut, Jon Marguiles, and Jorge Caballero. they have recently played with Gyan Riley and Peter Dragotta. Matt and Eric joined in 2007, adding poetry and live oil painting to the mix. The Exploration Project is an improvisational avant-garde music group. Everything except the poetry is unrehearsed.
