I am an Opera | Joseph Keckler
Employing a powerful, classically trained voice, Keckler presents a quadrilingual collection of arias and recitatives that often sound vaguely familiar, as though they might belong to the bel canto repertoire. But rather than prayers to the gods or suicidal swansongs, these laments and buffo showpieces tell minor stories from Keckler’s own life: a trip on hallucinogens, an expedition to the bondage store, and the time he fell asleep in the stairwell at a day job. Treating the show as a “trip” itself, Keckler also invokes a hallucinatory world in which he is possessed by taunting demons and visited by a persnickety voice teacher who emanates from an atmospheric silent film.

Ear Heart Music | Del Sol String Quartet: Peradam
San Francisco’s Del Sol String Quartet returns to Ear Heart Music with Peradam, an object that is revealed only to those who seek it with purity of intention. Peradam, a mythical diamond-like stone, is the invention of René Daumal, appearing in his novel, Mount Analogue. Metaphorical for a rare and beautiful natural phenomenon, peradam implies the presence of discoveries attained over a lifetime. In this program, Del Sol searches for truth through the diverse yet thematically cohesive sonic aesthetics and emotions of Cambodia, Estonia, throat-singing, and the night club. The compositions explore a sense of place as related to identity, what it means to uproot oneself from homeland, and how music ties us across boundaries that may be otherwise impenetrable.

The String Orchestra of Brooklyn presents Paul Bowles: A Musical Portrait
Paul Bowles is well known as a novelist (The Sheltering Sky) and sometimes Brooklyn resident (he lived in the storied “February House” with W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, and Gypsy Rose Lee), but it is less known that he was also a gifted composer. This concert features the diverse artistry of this American cultural icon. Art-song and solo piano alternate with Irene Herrmann’s reminiscences of her musical friendship with Bowles and readings from his letters and other writings. These combine into a rich portrait of Bowles as an author, composer, and friend.
