Drone Mass | Jóhann Jóhannsson

Johann Johannsson

American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), with Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated composer Jóhann Jóhannsson and Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, will give the world premiere of Jóhann’s Drone Mass in the Met’s magnificent Temple of Dendur. The work is commissioned by ACME in celebration of the group’s tenth anniversary. Jóhann’s Chaconne for solo violin opens the concert, in its world premiere performance by Yuki Numata Resnick.

New-York-native, California-based vocalist and composer Odeya Nini shares a night with California-native, New-York-based vocalist and composer Gelsey Bell to explore the edges of the solo voice. In celebration of Nini’s recent release of her album Vougheauxyice, both perform solo sets of their own compositions and then conclude the evening with the premiere of a duet.

The Glass Farm Ensemble & Greis

The Glass Farm Ensemble presents the world premiere of a new work for rapper and ensemble, with rap artist Greis and music by Yvonne Troxler. Based on the musical similarities between the two styles of music Glass Farm Ensemble draw a piece with overlays of rap and contemporary classical music. In addition to this new work they perform Gyorgy Kurtag’s Bagatelles Op. I4Id for flute, double bass, and piano, and Frederic Rzewski’s Chains for narrator and ensemble.

Paradise Interrupted

Paradise Interrupted is a poetic weaving of the western myth of the Garden of Eden and the Chinese myth of the Peony Pavilion. The narrative follows a woman in search for an unattainable ideal, exploring a world that is activated by her singing voice as she attempts to return to the garden.This is the first opera for Jennifer Wen Ma, who was the chief designer for visual and special effects for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
