New Music Help Desk: Nico Muhly | Spektral Quartet

Spektral Quartet

The New Music Help Desk is an opportunity for composers and performers to get face time with Spektral Quartet– to ask pointed questions about notation, feasibility, tuning systems, and string harmonics. Their aim is to use their skills to both build community and keep creativity flowing for artists hemmed in by this quarantine. The May 1 event also features composer Nico Muhly.

Novel Stages

An online music festival where artists share 30-minute sets of pre-recorded performances from their studios and homes, previously unavailable concert footage, and new creative presentations intended for your screen. Featured artists include Shara Nova, Roomful of Teeth, ETHEL, Ashley Bathgate, Haley, Cameron Kinghorn, JT Bates, Zoo Animal, Grant Cutler, and many others. Ticket buyers will receive a private access code to the festival stream 2-10 PM Central Time, as well as a video file of each festival performance after the festival concludes. Ticket purchases support these artists affected by COVID-19.

Alone Together | Jennifer Koh

Violinist Jennifer Koh’s Alone Together is an online commissioning project that brings composers together in support of the many freelancers among them. Twenty-one composers have each agreed to donate a new, 30-second micro-work for solo violin while also recommending a fellow composer to write their own 30-second solo violin work on paid commission from the artist-driven nonprofit ARCO Collaborative. Koh will premiere a selection of these donated and commissioned works each Saturday at 7:00 p.m Eastern Time.

Bang on a Can Marathon

Bang on a Can pivots its annual music marathon to the web. The 2020 Marathon features 26 live performances from musicians’ homes in NYC and around the country. The concert begins with a performance by Meredith Monk and concludes with a performance by Bang on a Can All-Star pianist Vicky Chow playing John Adams’s China Gates. Additional highlights include Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint performed by flutist Claire Chase, performances by Vijay Iyer, Maya Beiser, Shara Nova, Nathalie Joachim, and many more.

Vicente Hansen Atria & Jay Campbell, cello | Connecting ACO Community

In response to the impacts of COVID-19 on composers and performers, American Composers Orchestra announces Connecting ACO Community, a new initiative to commission short works for solo instrument or voice. Each composer will receive $500 to write the work, and each performer will receive $500 to perform the work, with the rights to stream for six months. With this project, ACO aims to support artists who need financial assistance; to create new work that will live beyond this crisis; and provide virtual, interactive performances to ACO’s supporters and the general public. This event will include the world premiere of Vicente Hansen Atria’s new work for cellist Jay Campbell and an exclusive Q&A with the composer and performer, hosted by Ed Yim and Derek Bermel.

Watch Parties | On Site Opera

From mid-March to mid-April, On Site Opera will host live-streamed “watch parties” on their Facebook page. Each Monday at noon, they will show the video of one of their past site-specific opera productions, followed by a live Q&A with On Site Opera’s General & Artistic Director, Eric Einhorn. These archival videos will remain on their company’s YouTube page for public viewing through the end of April.
