The Ghost of Gesualdo: An Evening with Ensemble Amarcord | Chelsea Music Festival

Set in the General Theological Seminary’s resplendent chapel, this evening juxtaposes works from the enigmatic Renaissance madrigalist Gesualdo di Venosa and his contemporaries such as Marenzio and Verdelot. CMF 2013 Composers-in-Residence Edmund Finnis and Eric Nathan will also present World Premieres of their works inspired by Gesualdo, giving testimony to the legacy left by one of the most poetic and original composers of the late Renaissance.

Unpacked Treasures: CMF at the Italian Academy | Chelsea Music Festival

Highlights include a Corelli Concerto Grosso, an oboe concerto by Corelli’s great admirer Giovanni Platti, Elizabethan madrigals with ensemble amarcord, and Variations on an Elizabethan Theme for string orchestra that feature arrangements by six leading 20th century British composers including Benjamin Britten.

Ladies First–tell it like it is–

The concert will be performed by some of NYC’s finest chamber musicians and new music specialists, including toy piano virtuoso Margaret Leng Tan, internationally acclaimed sopranos and Sing For Hope Co-Founders Monica Yunus and Camille Zamora, and cellist/singer Marika Hughes of bands Two Foot Yard and Bottom Heavy. They will be joined by percussionist Damien Bassman, violinist Lynn Bechtold, 7-string bass guitarist Dan Cooper, guitarist Gene Pritsker, oboist Keve Wilson, and cellist Anja Wood. Music includes world premieres by Ms. Bechtold, Ms. Hughes, Milica Paranosic (featuring a melody by Dvorak), and Mr. Pritsker. Other works are by Robert Aldridge, Svjetlana Bukvich, Mr. Cooper, Herschel Garfein, Ge Gan-Ru, Scott Gendel, and Veronika Krausas. Accessories provided by Christina Z Antonio Leather Artisans, Elizabeth Gillett, and Sequin Jewelry.

Italian Air: Carte Blanche to MDI Ensemble Milan | Chelsea Music Festival

This year’s Carte Blanche concert showcases Milan’s mdi ensemble, who will present a program of 20th century Italian composers such as Niccolò Castiglioni, Franco Donatoni and Bruno Bettinelli, a leading composer of the neoclassicist movement in Italy who was greatly influenced by Benjamin Britten, with whom he shares the centennial celebration of his birth.
