Following up his 2009 debut album, Enter Houses Of (on John Zorn’s Tzadik label), Minnesota-born composer Mario Diaz de Leon is back on Denovali, this time, with The Soul Is The Arena (out on July 17).
Diaz de Leon’s influences range from 20th century composers (Scelsi, Ligeti, Dumitrescu, and Xenakis) to electronic music, noise, and metal. He is also active as a solo performer under the moniker of Oneirogen (o-NI-ro-jen).
The three labyrinthine tracks organically blend acoustic and electronic elements to paint vivid sonic mirages. The almost decade-long collaboration with ICE really serves Diaz de Leon’s music, and soloists Claire Chase (flute) and Joshua Rubin (bass clarinet) truly shine.
