University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra and University of Kentucky Wind Symphony

For the University of Kentucky School of Music’s centennial, both its Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony present an array of contemporary and traditional concert band compositions, such as Sousa’s The Stars and Stripes Forever, Dvořák’s From the New World, and the world premiere of James M. Stephenson’s Wildcat Run. The evening’s 130 players, between the ages of 18 and 30, are conducted by John Cody Birdwell and John Nardolillo.

The wide scope of styles, concepts and instrumentation includes the NYC premiere of newly conceived game pieces by Israel-Canadian composer Ofer Pelz, performed by cellist Mariel Roberts with Nadav Lev on electric guitar. Tal Gur and his band present Mind Crossing, a multi-media piece featuring poetry and video-dance based on a collection of letters written by Gur’s grandfather after the Holocaust. Composer Guy Brash performs on electronics together with poet Nick Flynn present their project KILLlDEER, with special composer/performer guest Ronen Shai. Singer-songwriter Yonatan Gutfeld performs his recently composed set of songs In Exile Even in His Room, and Nadav Lev presents additional collaborations with clarinetist Vasko Dukovski and cellist Mariel Roberts.

Alexei Lubimov + Calidore String Quartet

Alexei Lubimov premieres works he commissioned from Russian composers Pavel Karmanov and Sergei Zagny. Lubimov plays organ in Zagny’s nod to baroque music. In Karmanov’s I Made My Home, he plays prepared piano and is joined by bass player Logan Coale and the Calidore String Quartet, which opens the concert with one of the Haydn opus 20 quartets.

Two voices share the role of the sole transgender protagonist, Hannah, in this story that follows her journey to self-truth. With empathy and humor, As One traces Hannah’s experiences from her youth in a small town to her college years on the West Coast, and finally to Norway where she is surprised at what she learns about herself. Two rotating casts that emphasize diversity and the universal nature of its story. Music by Laura Kaminsky and libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed.

Experiments in Opera and Contemporaneous present the premiere of Chunky in Heat an opera based on a libretto by celebrated author A. M. Homes. Chunky in Heat tells the story of a young girl who comes of age poolside at her family’s home in the canyons of Los Angeles. Against this backdrop of privilege, she struggles to understand her place in her family and the world. Chunky in Heat features music by Jason Cady, Paula Matthusen, Erin Rogers, Aaron Siegel, Shelley Washington, and Matthew Welch.
