Yarn/Wire – Photo by Bobby Fisher

The first of Yarn/Wire’s new series Yarn/Wire/Currents celebrates music by composers who use drone, homemade instruments and devices to subvert and expand our listening experiences. Though some of the music verges on inaudibility, these composers delight in creating unusually satisfying juxtapositions of sonic material.

CD Release concert: Reappearances

Reappearances

Reappearances

Opening the program is the US premiere of Berlin-based composer Mark Barden’s Nocturne, commissioned by the 2013 Modern Festival on behalf of Mivos. Through a compelling dialogue between intense, quietly virtuosic solo cello and abrasive, unrelenting string trio, Nocturne explores the listener’s perception of subtle and nuanced shifts as a structural element over the course of the piece. Next up, London-based composer Dai Fujikura’s Flare employs virtuosic and extroverted traditional “showpiece” techniques as materials. From Reappearances, Mivos will then present Felipe Lara’s Corde Vocale, an ultra-expressionistic tour de force for string quartet. Closing out the program is the world premiere of Scott Wollschleger’s String Quartet No. 2, White Wall, which explores the depth and variety of white-noise like sounds on strings – structured, meditative, and beautiful.

Michael Lowenstern | Musical Ecologies

Musical Ecologies continues Thursday, December 19 with Brooklyn-based composer and bass clarinetist Michael Lowenstern. Widely regarded in the classical, jazz and contemporary music worlds as one of the premiere bass clarinetists, Lowenstern is increasingly known for his high-tech, genre-crossing solo performances of his original works. Combining formidable instrumental skills, computers, props and a range of electronic gizmos with his strong sense of humor and a deep appreciation for pop culture, Michael creates an infectious style that might loosely be called “ClassicoFunkTronica.” Following a conversation with series host Dan Joseph, Michael will perform a set drawing from his solo recordings Spin Cycle, Fade and Ten Children as well as new work from a forthcoming release in 2014.

Cadillac Moon Ensemble | Den of Death

Cadillac Moon Ensemble

Cadillac Moon Ensemble

the cell presents Cadillac Moon Ensemble (CME) in a concert of four new premieres by up-and-coming composers willing to push boundaries both musically and politically at the cell in Chelsea, Manhattan. Originally conceived as a reply to a set of inflammatory liner notes, this program is an ironic, comical, and serious reaction to Proverbs 7:26-7, “For she has been the ruin of many; many men have been her victims. Her house is the road to Sheol. Her bedroom is the den of death.” Each composer has taken this theme in a very different direction, directly focusing directly on death (Matt Marks), a science-fiction micro-opera (Alex Temple), irony and cats (Melody Loveless), and blurring lines (Viet Cuong).
