At the Other Side of the Earth (A Riot Girl Opera)

Marie Incontrera

Marie Incontrera

At the Other Side of the Earth is a modern-day lesbian punk opera about love in an oppressive nation, and how one girl learns to break the rules in order to find happiness. Aurora is forced to face who she truly is when she meets Layla, an out-and-proud “riot grrrl” with a bold and brazen demeanor. Layla’s radical political activism and boyish charm cause Aurora great inner turmoil and conflict until she comes out, gaining confidence and proudly declaring herself. When the two women begin their affair, their love clashes with an oppressive, conservative society where same-sex relationships are against the law. Their struggle with a George Orwellian law enforcer, appropriately named The Man, proves to be both terrifying and hilariously futile, as the two women attempt to follow their hearts to great risk.

Matsukaze

Inspired by a popular 15th-century play crafted in part by Noh master Zeami, the opera features a spare, ethereal score by Toshio Hosokawa, one of Japan’s most prominent living composers of contemporary classical music. Matsukaze tells the story of two sisters, two lingering spirits, who wander the porous boundary of the living and the dead in hopes of being freed from a former mortal lover. John Kennedy conducts the Talea Ensemble and a cast of soloists and chorus in this arresting, dreamlike performance set in the shadowy place where the wall between the ephemeral and the corporeal disappears.

Michaels Reise um die Erde

Avery Fisher Hall is set to be transformed in the overdue American premiere of this seminal instrumental opera by 20th-century musical visionary Karlheinz Stockhausen in a production from the Wiener Taschenoper. Michaels Reise um die Erde (“Michael’s Journey Around the World”) is the second act of his opera Donnerstag (“Thursday”), part of his monumental career-capping seven-opera cycle titled Licht, only portions of which have ever been produced. The musicians of Cologne-based Ensemble musikFabrik provide the propulsive sonic background of this unforgettable event.

Zorn@60: The Holy Visions

John Zorn

John Zorn

The first night of Zorn@60 consists of two lyrical works for a cappella female voices: Shir Ha-Shirim (“Song of Songs”), inspired by one of the Hebrew scriptures’ most enigmatic texts, and Zorn’s mystery play The Holy Visions, based on the work of 12th-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen. The evening concludes with Zorn himself at the controls of Alice Tully Hall’s Kuhn organ performing a wild recital of improvisations called The Hermetic Organ.
