Great Choir: Immigrants – A Celebration of What Makes New York Great
Instrumental ensemble Rose of the Compass will present music from the cultures represented by the cathedral’s seven Chapels, while the Cathedral Choir will answer with pieces by immigrants who composed in America, sharing their culture and their art. Composers will include Vincent Persichetti, whose parents came from Italy and Germany; F. Melius Christiansen, the great founder of the St. Olaf Choir; Rebecca Clarke and Tarik O’Regan, who both emigrated from the British Isles; Jean Berger from Germany; and Igor Stravinksy from Russia. The concert will culminate with a world premiere by Robert Sirota, on a libretto by the Reverend Canon Victoria Sirota, celebrating New York’s identity as a melting pot of humanity.

On Tuesday April 10th, the 20th MATA Festival mainstage kicks off with Out of Bounds, featuring the East Coast debut of Mexico’s only independent new music ensemble, Liminar. Beginning with Sergey Khismatov’s D-musik for soprano broadcast from within a shower in the offices of the Kitchen, the evening edges toward the stage by way of Carlos Iturralde’s Fata Morgana, for offstage and onstage ensembles, and Juro Kim Feliz’s Pangkur for two spatially separated groups culminating in the world premiere of Joseph Bates’s a noise so loud, alongside newly commissioned works from Daniel Silliman and Annie Gosfield.

MATA delves into a world of dreams and nightmares, probing the depths of self and other in an evening of newly commissioned work from composer-performers Erin Rogers and a performance by Ken Ueno together with Du Yun. The evening will celebrate the festival’s most meaningful pieces, selected by some of those who have shaped MATA’s 20-year history, including Du Yun (artistic director, 2015-2018), Yotam Haber (artistic director, 2011-2015), Missy Mazzoli (executive director, 2007-2010), David T. Little (executive director, 2010-2012), and Lisa Bielawa and Eleonor Sandresky (founders and directors, 1998-2005). The evening will center around a reconstruction of composer Randy Hostetler’s P(l)aces. Also on the program, composer Carlos Gutierrez Quiroga’s Jintili will be performed. Dissections
NY-based composer-performer ensemble Invisible Anatomy will celebrate the release of its debut album, Dissections, on April 15 at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall as part of the LPR: Presents series, with Lisel (the recording project of Eliza Bagg) opening. Dissections will be released March 30 through New Amsterdam Records, and features five new works by the group’s members.
